Get to know the natural beauties of the Seridó

The Seridó Geopark has a proposal of great social and environmental impact, as it works with the preservation of nature, a conscious ecological tourism. Through it, the interiorization of tourism and the adoption of sustainable practices that value harmonious coexistence between man and nature.

CLIMATE

The Seridó Geopark is located within the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. Atmospheric circulation is influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which operates in the summer, and the Atlantic Equatorial mass, which predominates from autumn to spring. Due to the climatic classification of Köeppen, the climate of the area is BSw’h (hot and semi-arid, tending to arid), with irregular rainfall. In general, they are significant and occur in the period from February to July, concentrating most of them, from March to June. The average annual rainfall is 650 mm, evaporation of 1,760 mm and a water deficit of 1000 mm, during nine months. The number of hours of sunshine has an average of 3385 hours / year. It presents high temperatures with averages around 27ºC, being the maximum at 38ºC and the minimum at around 15ºC. The relative humidity presents values ​​that vary between 59 and 76% (Rio Grande do Norte, 2009).

VEGETATION

The vegetation of the region is characterized by the Caatinga (white vegetation) domain, which presents high xerophilic rates, due to an extremely rigorous climate, low rainfall indexes and irregular distribution, constituting the Hyperxerophilic and Subdesertic types. In this plant formation three distinct types predominate: an arboreal stratum dominating aroeira, braúna, imburana, pereiro, algaroba and craibeira; a second type of twisted and thorny branches, up to 3 m high, described as catingueira, faveleira, pinhão bravo, jurema, oiticica and quince; and finally, a stratum, about 50 cm from the ground, formed by xiquexique, macambira and palm of thorns.
